New Pastor Search

Position Description

WHO ARE WE?  We are a small, vibrant church in a rural setting in upstate New York in search of a pastor to lead us.  Our church is located about 50 miles north of Albany on an island bounded by the Hudson River and the Champlain Canal of the New York State Barge Canal system.

Our sanctuary was built in 1816 and served as the area meetinghouse until our church was organized in 1822.   In 1996, our sanctuary and the other buildings on the premises were listed on the National Register of Historic Places as an “intact example of a 19th century church/community complex.”

We have had an active Sunday School, youth faith formation programs, and a summer vacation Bible school program, all of which we need to rebuild.  We currently have a women’s service group (the Vereenigheit Circle) and a Bible study program, but we need to grow these programs.   We support numerous missions and charitable programs through tithing and volunteering.

Our goals, as a community of believers, are to (1) grow in faith and knowledge of God, (2) build and strengthen our relations with one another, particularly with those new members of the community around Fort Miller, (3) increase our membership, (4) instill a strong set of values in our children, (5) support our sick and elderly, (6) maintain our historic property for future generations, and (7) build our meetinghouse program, hosting a wide-range of events for the community around our church.

OUR MISSION STATEMENT:  Our mission is to be an all-welcoming church; to spread God’s word of faith, hope, love and support in Jesus’ name.

  • Ordained, seminary graduate (RCA or other)
  • Preaches from and is passionate about the Bible
  • Embraces our “Big Tent,” all-welcoming philosophy
  • Engages the congregation; a good preacher/teacher
  • Relates well with children; a positive role model
  • Willing to help in all church and community meetinghouse program activities
  • Social media savvy
  • Appreciates a rural setting/life style

SCOPE OF WORK:  Our new pastor will lead our worship service at 10:30 a.m. each Sunday from September through May and at 10:00 a.m. in June, July, and August.  Our pastor organizes the service, brings the message, and officiates at baptisms, weddings, and funerals.  Sunday School is held at 10:30 a.m. during worship.   Our pastor has supervisory oversight responsibilities for the curriculum and the staff of our youth programs.  Our pastor makes home visitations, ministers to the sick and elderly in their homes, in hospitals, and in nursing facilities, counsels those in crisis, and participates with other clergy in the ecumenical Lenten services held in the Schuylerville area churches.  Our pastor participates, along with our elder delegates, in the meetings and programs of the Schenectady Classis, the local administrative/governing body of the RCA.

We estimate that an average of about 10-15 hours each week will be required to discharge these responsibilities.  Our pastor, customarily, has four Sundays off each year as vacation.

WHAT ARE WE OFFERING?  Our starting salary will be $12,000 annually.  We will pay the employer SSI contribution and reimburse (at the standard IRS allowance) the cost of a vehicle used in conducting church business.  We are not able to offer, at this time, health insurance benefits.  The church has a  parsonage which we will provide to our new pastor if need be  in lieu of the  $12,000 annual salary.  However, he/she will be responsible for the utilities.  (At this time, we can’t pay both the starting salary and provide a parsonage with utilities; either a $12,000 salary or a parsonage without utilities.)

As we grow our church, we will hopefully be able to improve on this initial offer.   We understand that our new pastor may need another job or ministry in a second church to make our offer financially viable.  We may be able to provide assistance with a local job search.

PASTORAL SEARCH PROCESS:  We do not have a formal position application to complete for this search.  In lieu of a formal application, we ask that candidates submit a letter of interest and a resume.  The letter of interest should respond to these questions:

  • What is your vision and what are your hopes for your ministry?
  • What excites you the  most about becoming the pastor of the Fort Miller Reformed Church?

Please send your letter of interest and resume to me, Jan Peterson, Secretary, Fort Miller Reformed Church, P. O.  Box 324, Fort Edward, NY  12828.  Our search is ongoing and will continue until the position is filled.
